Understanding that healthy eating affects everything we do. Students analyze their current diets and the nutritional concerns they have. Students research their nutritional need and investigate solutions. Students create their own solutions to their nutritional need. Students will advertise their health snack and its benefits. Students organize food ordering, understand the importance of hygiene when preparing food and learn basic cooking skills.
Students understand that Students are able to Students value
Tapping Into Understanding / Finding Questions Students write on separate post-its and place on the main white board:
a perceived truth about nutrition
a perceived myth about nutrition
Students read and separate the post-its onto boards titled Truth, Myth/False Students research and debate to answer post-its. As students research they are to maintain a list of questions they asked. Students present their research to the group.
Lesson 2 - 3
Exploring the Evidence Students spend two lessons watching "what the health" and "Fed Up" I also ensure there is time to watch "what's the truth" (all featured below) as a counter perspective to both films. I encourage students to independently watch the other youtube video's at home.
While watching the video's students are to take notes on the following:
what advice was provided that you live by?
what advice was provided that you don't adopt in your daily lives?
what information was provided that you doubt, question or debate?
maintain a list of nutritional practices you feel requires continued research
Lesson 4 - Formation of Question / Research Lesson 5 & 6 - Harkness Discussion / Reflection
Finding Questions Students create questions that they wish to explore. The slide show provides students with some guidelines to their questions:
inquiry requires a questions with tension
can it be argued by multiple perspectives
stop "going fishing" for the right answer
Students write their question on the board, they work in pairs to proof read, correct and improve the question. Each student has 3 votes and places ticks around the question identifying their choice. Students research and construct a theory for each questions. They arrive next class ready for a harkness discussion.
Below I have:
the Google Slides presentation created with student devised questions and helpful discussion hints.
a youtube clip that helps introduce the process impact/intent to students
references to theory to help explain the process
four observations perspective sheets that help teachers provide discussion feedback to students.
