Welcome to our Nutrition Unit.
Nutrition is not my favourite topic to teach. I feel that the information available is not alway relevant to an international community full of different diets, beliefs and customs. This unit takes an alternative approach. Students begin tapping into their current understanding of the unit by defining "good and bad" foods and where our beliefs of these came from. We begin to question our current knowledge by researching government organisations and their influences on the information that is available to educators. By looking at the provided unit overview - there are a number of youtube links to videos that can start debates over current understanding. Students are to then look at their own personal diets and look for areas of improvement. Many students look at caffeine addiction, chocolate, salty , sugary and processed food. Once they have identified an issue they are to create a snack alternative and an informational brochure outlining their reasons on why their alternative will be more beneficial. I had this idea at a previous school where we going to team up with the MYP design department. Due to budgets and equipment this was not able to happen however if you are looking for a cross curricular project, this could be it. |
