Body Image

Students use the documentary Embrace as a starting tool for their investigation on societies ability to impact the way they feel about their bodies. Students research the implications of photo shop, instagram, media, marketing etc on their thought process. Students take on a personal "selfie" challenge and reflect on how the process impacted their beliefs about themselves.

Learners Understand that our ideas about body image are shaped by social and economic forces...and how to fight back.

Learners are able to critically analyze media, make decisions about real and fake images, make decisions to positively contribute to social media.

Learners are becoming more aware of their ability to influence society.

Embrace the Documentary was the focus point of our Gr9 Health Unit. The school purchased the curriculum and we adapted the program to fit with our Argentine and international demographic.

Embrace and the Body Image Movement have a curriculum, documentary and 4 week self care program. I personally have done the all and advocate highly for people to make the leap of faith and check it out.

The beauty of this program is how it demonstrates to students the inaccuracies of media while empowering them to be positive contributors. There were too many "aha" . moments to list.

I have placed below some additional youtube videos we used to support the programs, links to youtube channels we believe are worth subscribing to and the assessment we used during the unit. Some of the videos below were found by students who were investigating positive messages on media channels they access.

Lincoln Health Class Project - "Redefine Beauty"

Welcome to our class project. Our aim was to understand our contribution to positive media.
Teachers and students at our school posted unfiltered selfies of ourselves.
We commented on our own and others pictures. Our comments kept in mind our ability to influence what we see and read on media outlets.
Students used the comments, likes and emojis to analyze their communities body diversity and image.
We welcome all schools and communities to contribute to our project or start your own positive contributions to social media.

Formative

This was intense but fun way to summarize our learning and link to our final project.
It is a reminder for students to take good notes.
Students peer reviewed each others work.
Students will bring the review next lesson to use when working their summative.
